Vitamin D3 or omega-3 fatty acids: which supplement slows biological aging?

Telomeres are protective DNA caps that shorten over time as cells divide. When too short, they compromise cellular function and contribute to chronic disease and aging. While previous studies suggested a possible benefit from vitamin D and omega-3s, long-term clinical trial data has been limited—until now.

About the Study

This analysis comes from the VITAL study, a large, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving over 25,000 U.S. adults. For the telomere sub-study, 1,031 participants were monitored over four years, with telomere length measured at baseline, two years, and four years via quantitative PCR.

Participants were randomized to receive one of four interventions:

  • Vitamin D3 (2,000 IU/day)
  • Omega-3 fatty acids (1g/day)
  • Both supplements
  • Placebo

Key Results

Among the 2,571 blood samples analyzed, only vitamin D3 supplementation showed a statistically significant reduction in telomere shortening:

  • Participants taking vitamin D3 lost 0.14 kilobase pairs less over four years—roughly 140 base pairs preserved.
  • No significant difference was found in the omega-3 group compared to placebo.
  • These findings suggest a modest but meaningful benefit of vitamin D3 in protecting against cellular aging, while omega-3 fatty acids did not demonstrate the same effect.

  • Woman – middle age: “Even though I have always eaten well and supplemented with vitamins and minerals, I struggled for years with fatigue. The CNA identified that I was not getting enough and the right forms of B vitamins, vitamin E, and a few amino acids. I have started to eat  more protein sources and changed my supplement routine. My energy is better and I noticed that my focus has also improved.”
  • Woman – middle age: “My doctor recommended the CNA together with the Alcat Test because no tests helped my skin rash. I was amazed that my skin problems were gone after only 6 weeks and I feel much better. Some fruits, veggies and casein were reactive in my Alcat list. I was missing vitamin E and K. You can’t guess – I found out what “healthy” means for me only after I got tested!”

If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have the safest way to health. (Hippocrates)

People are often confused as to whether or not their supplements are truly benefiting them. This test answers those questions.

Micronutrients counteract stress and improve resistance to environmental pollution, toxins, and drugs, which varies from person to person. Many factors, such as lifestyle, genetics, pregnancy, recent infection, sleep patterns, overexertion in sports, age, gender, and other factors may play a role in your nutritional status and needs.

The Cellular Nutrition Assay (CNA) reflects how your immune cells respond to and are protected by specific micronutrients and antioxidants all of which is based on your biochemical individuality.

Thus, the CNA tells you what your cells need.

Everybody’s nutritional needs are different. The Cellular Nutrition Assays (CNA) examine how your cells respond to specific nutrients – not just whether you are within “normal population ranges”. The CNA provides the basis for personalized foods and supplements tailored to your unique needs.

  • Identify micronutrient insufficiencies: cellular micronutrient status; 55 vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other nutrients
  • Cell stress testing: your cells’ ability to resist oxidative stress (redox)
  • Cell Protection testing: particularly beneficial antioxidants for you: 49 antioxidants, botanicals, phytonutrients, anti-inflammatory, nutrients, fatty acids, and enzymes

The Previ Expert Package will take into account all laboratory findings for your personalized diet and supplement plan.

Nutrient stores in cells reflect long-term nutritional status and have the most functional impact. We analyze the direct response of your immune cells (lymphocytes) when individual micronutrients are added to them. When we see increased metabolism of your immune cells it may indicate a micronutrient insufficiency.

The Redox Assay or your “cell stress test” reflects your antioxidant capacity, in other words, your cells’ ability to resist oxidative damage.

The cell protection part of the test indicates which nutrients should be considered to protect your immune cells, resist oxidative damage, and improve your overall antioxidant capacity (Redox).

Results are actionable, easy to understand, and meaningful.

A simple blood draw is needed.

Nutrients are highlighted according to your cellular responses. Descriptions of each “insufficient” nutrient and “protective” antioxidant are provided along with specific foods to emphasize in your diet.

We recommend that this test be used as part of a comprehensive nutritional assessment with individualized guidance as provided with the Previ Expert Package.

Telomere Length Test

Are you aging faster than you would like due to telomere shortening?

Current research shows that telomere shortening contributes to cellular aging and susceptibility to metabolic disorders and chronic disease.

According to scientific research, telomere shortening may contribute to aging and age-related conditions. Telomeres are segments of DNA found at the ends of chromosomes. They can be prematurely shortened when exposed to environmental chemicals, oxidation, inflammation, and stress. This leads to DNA damage and contributes to early cell death.

  • Shorter telomeres have been associated with cardiovascular disease, inflammatory disorders, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cognitive decline, and other chronic degenerative conditions associated with aging.

    • Neurological conditions such as cognitive impairment, chronic stress 10, 11
    • Metabolic disorders such as diabetes, glucose intolerance, obesity 12, 13
    • Cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease 14-16
    • Musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis 17, 18
    • Immune-related conditions such as Hepatitis C, cancer, autoimmune disorders 19-21

Inflammation is associated with aging and telomere shortening. Telomeres become shorter after each cell division until eventually chromosomal DNA reaches a critical point at which the cell can no longer divide (known as the Hayflick limit).22 The loss of this protective telomere “armor” renders DNA vulnerable to damage and may result in an individual’s increased risk for accelerated aging and associated health conditions. If telomeres are maintained, then termination of cell division (senescence) and programmed cell death (apoptosis) can be delayed.

The test analyzes your average telomere length in white blood cells compared to the normal reference range for your age-matched population.

Easy to understand color-coded test results compare telomere length to reference ranges of your age-matched population. Graphic version of the result allows for easier understanding and analysis.

  • I was so excited to have lost weight, felt great and was able to eliminate taking my diabetes and blood pressure medications. I will be 82 years old in August. I dance two or three days per week. No one believes my age. Zelda from Florida
  • […] This testing methodology has been the key to resolving many patient’s long standing complaints, including dermatologic issues, fatigue, headache, joint and soft-tissue pain, gastrointestinal discomfort, and much more when other diagnostic testing and treatment intervention had failed. David Brady, ND, CCN, DACBN
  • […] it has truly changed lives. With the utilization of this testing and following the elimination diets I have seen numerous cases of severe irritable bowel syndrome completely resolve. Lifelong eczema disappears. Joint pain improves associated with arthritis as well as idiopathic joint pain. People are able to lose weight when they have tried everything else with no results. ADD and ADHD kids are more focused not requiring medication or can at least lower the doses. Crohn’s disease disappears. These are just a few of the positive outcomes I have seen. The Alcat Test is […] is absolutely essential in treating underlying causes of diseases. Laura Miles, MD

Are you confused by all the dietary advice? Gluten-free, Paleo, dairy-free, no nightshades, no caffeine, vegan, no grains… ever feel like you’re constantly trying to pinpoint which foods you should and shouldn’t eat?

You are unique. One way to personalize your diet with the foods that are right for you is to take the Alcat functional food sensitivity test.

This anti-inflammatory diet may support the immune system, detoxification and metabolism – a prerequisite for health, wellness and performance.

Our functional food sensitivity is a biological immune cell activation. Detected cell changes in volume, size and number are associated with cell activation potentially causing inflammation.

Immune cell activation is the cause of inflammation

The immune system is a double edged sword. It should react appropriately and protect against infection when confronted with harmful invaders.

The above figure shows the defense reaction of an immune cell (neutrophil/eosinophil granulocyte) causing inflammation. Beside pathogens such reactions can also be induced by foods, toxins or chemicals. The scientific term is DAMP, danger/damage associated molecular pattern. Adverse reactions to foods are found to be a factor in chronic and cardio-metabolic diseases, or autoimmunity.

The Alcat Test does NOT measure “true” food allergy classic allergy type 1) where symptom onset is immediate and acute. The Alcat Test identifies foods which may cause delayed type hypersensitivities that are usually chronic and low grade. Therefore, you may not be aware that chronic symptoms may be associated by foods regularly consumed.

A review of test results with your Previ Nutrition Counselor is included.

Your blood sample is sent to the laboratory. The sample first goes through a multi-step quality assurance process. During testing, your immune cells are confronted with foods and/or items including additives, colorings, molds, medicinal herbs, and chemical agents.

After testing, the results are presented in a clear and easy to read color-coded format, showing you which foods/substances to which your cells had a severe, moderate , mild, or no reaction.

A suggested dietary rotation plan is provided. The test result review is included.

Credibility of our lab tests

Functional Laboratory Testing aimed at personalized nutrition and prevention of chronic inflammation and autoimmune disease.

Functional testing can meet your unique needs and does not use population average standards. Instead, each test serves as its own baseline.

The Alcat food sensitivity or intolerance test identifies adverse reactions to dietary items. Especially innate immune cells are a reliable indicator of a pro-inflammatory reaction – they cause, initiate and maintain inflammation.

Immune cells can also be used as a biomarker for the absorption and metabolism of nutrients. The Cellular Nutrition Assays (CNA) show which nutrients, botanicals, antioxidants etc. are insufficient and which are beneficial for an individual.

The functional nutrition tests can be complimented using indicators or risk assessment for disease processes: for example, CICA for intestinal complaints or the telomere length test to determine the ratio between actual age and the so-called biological age.

Cell Science Systems (CSS) was the clear winner of the prestigious Frost & Sullivan Award, which was granted only once in 2016.

These points were particularly highlighted:

  • High quality of customer service
  • Great patient benefits from lab testing and improvement of symtoms
  • Scientific approach and ongoing studies
